Matt May is a Working Man

We haven't seen Matt around a lot due to his Micronesian worth ethic which as has resulted in publishing his book, The Elegant Solution. Matt was recently interviewed by 800ceoread which you can download and listen on your PC or iPod by going to the following link:

Team Fast Friday is developing its moniker...a recent favorite is:
"Team Fast Friday: Where Work Comes First! (for some of us)"

I believe Matt portrays the true FF spirit by publishing a book instead of riding a lot.

Well done Matt.

Team Fast Friday Being Formed

Dateline: Bern, Switzerland 10:00 GMT

Fast Friday Director Tod Turley announced today that the rumors are true that Fast Friday is forming a racing team over the Winter to start competing in Road Races, MTB Races, Triathlons, and Hot Dog Eating Contests. As many FF'ers are being tempted to join teams such as Team One and Amgen, Team FF (or TFF) is the counter culture team. Having analyzed the various teams in the World, true FF'ers do not have the DNA to survive a traditional cylclist team because they lack the unfavorable characteristics needed to stay on such a team.

The FF charter is clear: [No] uptight, cocky, angry person can be in the group. Accordingly, diplomacy, good naturedness and humility will be key characteristics of race participants.

The TFF advance team (Tod, Gary and PJ) are madly scurrying about doing the normal organizational things such as Jersey design (jerseys, shorts, arm warmers, leg warmers, chammy cream, watches, socks, etc.), UCI registration, website design, etc.

Don't be a bandwagoner..join now and pledge your allegiance. TFF will take over the World and you can say that you were a charter member. If you have ill advisedly joined another team, we will take you back. Our goal will be to participate in any events that our members want to race. To wit, here is the race director's list:
- 24 Hours of Temecula
- Epic 100 at Brianhead
- 24 Hours of Moab
- High Sierra Century

Make your own list and let us know. The website will contain rider profiles, clothing display/ordering store, rider calendar and it will be linked to the Blog.

This will work because Gary Wolfe is involved and everything Gary touches is successful and well thought out.

We are welcoming sponsors in the following priority: (1) our own companies to be put on the back pocket area of the Jersey in a discreet fashion - need to sign up and commit this year, (2) companies who can get us killer pricing on equipment and (3) sponsors with gobs of cash for distribution to TFF members.

FF was a Pisser

A new move called the "Pisser" was flawlessly executed today by Tod and Glen. After studying Chuck's peeing habits after 10+ years of riding together, Tod and Glen calculated that Chuck would be taking a pee break after the Mulholland Bridge Sprint (Sprint #2)..this is in addition to Chuck's habitual "kneel in the bushes" pisser he takes right before FF starts. Dan "Billy White Shoes Johnson" and Will graciously stopped to essentially watch Chuck piss (pretty sick when you think about it) and Tod and Glen slowed down acting like they were going to barely roll along while Chuck emptied his bladder. As Fate often plays a major role in anything FF, Chuck's bladder was "rol le bol" (French for spilling over the top) and his pee stop was excrutiatingly long. About 1/2 way up Rock Store, Tod and Glen realized that they had a substantial lead and started to push a bit with Glen taking the climb. The Power Climb results were the same with Dan, Will and Chuck a few minutes back. The regroup today was at Sprint #3 with Glen with 19 points and Tod 18 points. Things got exciting there as the group bunched up behind a big truck with a trailer in tow about 1/2 down Westlake...Tod made a move around the truck earlier than the "poursuivants" and was able to garner a substantial advantage by the time he hit the bottom of the descent and made it to the finish uncontested. Arguably, Tod and Glen are jerks and broke all kind of ethical rules by pulling off the Pisser...but Dan graciously gave up the Jersey to Tod (which smelled really bad by the way..I guess he thought he wasn't supposed to wash it and it smelled like both Dan and Duffy..my car smelled like a dog barfed in it by the time I got home with that thing).

Next week..we are calling on all FF'ers to make a resurgence in our numbers. With Daylight Savings Time kicking in, the ride will be warmer. IN THAT REGARD, who has the Pink Jersey for the KOM (Glen)? We think it is Big Dougie..give up the Pink dude! Chuck has the monthly leader jersey...next week starts a new month..let's all hit it.

Anthony's Moab Adventures

Ok, so some of you have been asking me how 24hrs of Moab was. Well, if you haven't already heard, it was pretty much 24hrs of rain, sand, muck, chain suck, and cold. If you want the whole story, check out this link that explains what happened and the ensuing mess the directors had on their hands as far as trying to figure things out. (they use the men's expert class as an example, which is the class our team--Team Dead Cow Locals--competed in)

http://grannygear.com/Current_News/2006-10-17-Moab_Post-Race%20Communique.html

The three pictures that I chose to include kinda represent the race for me personally. The first is a picture of the le mans style running start. Running is no problem, not even in mud, and look at all those people!! All smiles. The second is a picture after my first lap. Fun to get a wet and muddy and cold and feel like a tough guy. All smiles. The third picture is one that I took in the RV right before I got in the shower after I got back from my second lap. Down pouring rain. Flash flooding with knee deep river crossings. Chain suck about every two or three pedals strokes. Dark as hell, and about 45 degrees. No smiles hiding behind those little flecks of evil-red-Moab-clay-dirt-sludge. All out of smiles.
Right after the picture I heard them announce that racing was going to be called off for the rest of the night. That was almost enough to bring a smile to my face, but not quite. But, looking back, I wish that I could have raced into the night in a zombie like state. The weather robbed me of the true 24hr racing experience.

All in all, it was a great trip. Big thanks to Tod, Greg, and Pete for bringing along a first-timer and showing him a great time. Great group of people, and the Moab scene was really awesome. I can only imagine what it would have been like without all the rain.

So, now all you that were thinking about going know what you missed out on and could have been a part of. See you all there next year.

p.s. Thanks to Chris Brumble for letting me use his mt. bike as a spare (which I actually raced on). Chris: I think everything is back together and in working order, and you can pick you bike up at the shop anytime.

Tuesday Morning Ride

I missed Deer Creeak while I was home with Deary celebrating our anniversary. My loss. Heard it was steep as usual. 7:00 am at VONs. Out Potrero to the PCH and back up Mulholland. NOT a hard ride. Chris B, Duffy, Anthony and myself are going.

Is Deer Creek harder than....

From what I have heard, deer creek is a lot like this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jpblb1FNmqY
I guess it depends if you look at Lance or Jan as to if that is a good thing. Don't worry, I will wait for you all at the top to hear your stories about what was like to get hit by the man with the hammer on the way up. :)

See you Sunday Sunday Sunday!!!!

ALTERNATIVE Sunday ride

Anybody NOT going on the 7:30AM Deer John--er, Creek ride interested in leaving Vons at 8:30AM for some verticle pain? Possibilities include Piuma, Latigo, or even (gasp!) Deer Creek. This should not be construed as a "Second Wave", simply an alternative for those who, for whatever reason, cannot make the earlier start. Talk to me.

Italian's Dominate

Hello All,
We all had a great time at the beach. Big Johnny D. wrote the Following in an email.

Fellow Fast Fridayers, Fridayites, Fridayians?

Whatever. Today, the Mazzilianos domnated in the Hermosa Beach Triathlon. PJ took 2nd in the Thundertighs catagory (180-200lbs.) and Leah took 1st in Womens 18-24.

PJ had the fastest bike time in his Catagory showing how strong the Fast Friday riders really are. Leah had the fastest swim time at a blistering 9:12 and 3rd in the bike and run.

Those Mazilianos are a force to be reckoned with.

As for myself, my first attempt at this event I ended up 23nd out of 67 in the Men's 40-44. Those 40+ men are a tough bunch. The 2nd best time overall was a 42 year old who beat me by 13 minutes.

I started off bad by almost panicking as I hit the water. An open water swim is a scary thing I found out. I never quite got comfortable and was the 44th guy out of the water. My bike time was about 1 minute slower than PJ's and ranked 8th in my class. As for the run, I did a personal best at 23:11 for the 3 miles which was ranked 28th.

Overall it was a ge=reat experience, and even though during the swim I swore I would never do this again, After finishing, I can't wait to do it again. Although, I will stick to the sprint distances.

I want to thank Mike Tatum for all his generousity with advice and coaching. It made for a smooth event and the transitions went well.

PJ took some pictures and I am sure he will post a blog once he gets back home from San Diego.

Thanks to all of you for your encouragement and support.

Todd, I am sorry for the e-mail, but I am not able to post a blog.

Off to Moab - Dead Cow Locals

The Dead Cow Locals (Pete, Tod, Greg and Anthony) are headed off to Moab this weekend to race in the 24 Hours of Moab. We have to race Men's Expert because of Pete's classification and Anthony's age...we're going to be lucky to finish in the middle of the pack as this is the fastest class next to the men's pro.

You can follow the race live at http://grannygear.com/Races/Moab/index.shtml if you're bored.

Next year, this team will be racing under the new Fast Friday name and jerseys.

Sunday Ride

Hi everyone,

Sunday Westlake ride is Decker to the beach and up Mulholland. Lindero & T.O. 6:45am.

I will be riding my Tarmac with new SRAM Force!

Hope to see you out there!

Kim

Flight of the Brumble Bee

This Flight of the Brumble Bee
Was an event quite scary to see.

Chris flew into space,
Nearly smacking Dan's face,

Making Chuck and the rest almost pee.

UK Dan returns, AA WINS and Brumble Tumbles !

What a Friday. It was Lawrence's Birthday but he was unable to handle Angry Akers hill climbing and sprinting as Anthony beat UK Dan by 1 small point. Yes UK Dan was back with his new ZIPP wheels ! He was doing great on the sprints and with PJ absent and Rick Wallace out for the Fall the sprints points are going the way of climbers.

But the Major action took place on Westlake Blvd about a mile north of TO as Chris Brumble hit a freshly fallen Pinecone and tumbled over the bars and into the concrete berm. The helmet took the brunt of the fall but he had several wounds to the lump behind the left ear, his jaw and his left cheek. Jack took him home as he maid his return to Fast Friday.

One more ELEMENTAL addition was discovered today as Will Watson (24,green Bianchi, shaved head, used to race for AMGEN) showed up in his NEW but USED Element to add Mint Green to the current roster of colors.

Look for Brumble to post some blood shots soon.
